Being a twin is a unique experience, a life intertwined with another from the very beginning. It’s a life filled with different challenges, lots of fun, and an unbreakable bond that few people understand.
“[Having a twin is great because] you always have a friend,” Abby Emerson (‘27) said. “I tell [my twin brother] everything.”
Sharing birthdays is a challenge most twins hate. A birthday is usually a day that celebrates one person, but for twins, it’s not. They have to share everything they receive and the attention they wish could be all theirs.
“Sharing everything, especially birthdays, gets annoying after a while,” Drew Warwick (‘27) said. “But, it helps that most people understand [that sharing everything can be difficult].”
Many other challenges come with being a twin. They are together from birth, through youth, trying to be the same, but as they get older, they don’t always wish they were identical.
“When I was younger, I always aspired to be as similar to [my twin sister] as I could be, but now that we have grown older, I realized that I needed to become my own person with my own goals,” Lucy Gibson (‘27).
Finding yourself at a young age is hard—finding one’s place as a twin makes it significantly harder. Being compared all the time can become difficult, but they all eventually find their way.
“Being compared all the time does come with some pressure,” Emerson said. “Like when I was younger, I used to think [my twin] was more athletic than me, so I thought people wouldn’t like that, but as I got older, that comparison went away, and everything was fine.”
When being a twin, most comparisons die down as twins age. As twins grow older, they mainly focus on the good things of being a twin rather than looking at the bad of being a twin.
“I think it’s pretty cool that I have a built-in friend to do something with at all times,” Kaden Warwick (‘27) said. “It makes everything else worth it.”
Most of the time twins find themselves navigating the world as a team, celebrating each other’s successes and supporting each other through challenges. They are born into this world with a best friend for life, so even if that comes with some bad, it’s all worth it in the end because of that forever bond.
