Helping Fight Food Insecurity in our Community: AVID’s Canned Food Drive

Starting on November 28th and ending on Friday, December 9th, AGHS’ AVID program is hosting a non-perishable food drive.

Millions of adults and youth face food insecurity in California, and over 50% of people experience food insecurity locally within San Luis Obispo County.

AVID’s canned food drive was designed to help these issues. Collecting non-perishable food every December has become a tradition for the AVID program at AGHS and continues to bring success.

After the cans are donated, they are collected and counted by the AVID students.

“One time we got close to 8,000 [cans]”, AVID teacher Gail Varvel said.

The cans are then donated to Saint Patrick’s Church and directed toward the church food pantry.

The Saint Patrick church then packages these cans, adds gift cards and various presents, and gifts them to families in need for Christmas, all with the help of local volunteers.

“They have a food pantry year-round, but they try to do something extra special for Christmas, and they are always looking for help,”  Varvel said.

If you are interested in volunteering to help Saint Patrick’s Chruch fight food insecurity, you can contact their Food Distribution Center at this phone number:

Together, our campus can come to better our community, and the AVID Canned Food Drive is just one of the many ways we can contribute.
