A sweet new business has arrived in the Village of Arroyo Grande. A fresh, blue-raspberry paint job and a bubblegum pink sign invite patrons into the Village’s newest small business.
Hubbalicious Sweet Shoppe is owned and operated by the Hubbell Family. The store officially opened on December 3rd, 2023, just in time for the city’s annual Christmas parade.
“I’m having kids operate,” David Hubbell, co-owner, said. “They’re learning how to cook, they’re learning how to manage money, they’re learning how to do customer service [and] inventory checks.”
Hubbell’s niece, Haley Hubbell, is the manager of Hubbalicious. She is in charge of managing the store, restocking, and helping customers at the register.
“[There are] definitely a lot of learning points,” Haley Hubbell said. “But it’s very fun working with my family.”
Although the candy store is a new experience for the Hubbell family, it’s not their first business.
“We’ve helped Gladiator Paintball Park get up and running,” David Hubbell said. “And then we’ve done property management and real estate for the last 20 years.”
According to David Hubbell, the family is excited to be more involved in the community.
“We’ve never had anything where we have customers and [interact] with the general public,” David Hubbell said. “We are excited to have a different lifestyle, different transition.”
Hubbalicious Sweet Shoppe intends to cater to all ages. So far, the store has made a good impression on new customers.
“It’s beautiful when you walk in,” customer Megan Field said. “It’s so well organized [and] it’s so colorful and fun.”
Brynn Termeer (‘25), AGHS student, visited the store on opening day. She was excited to find candies that are hard to find in other stores.
“[The store] was really fun looking, very whimsical, and they had a lot of options—more than anything else in the village,” Termeer said. “It was cool to have something new and different.”
Hubbalicious Sweet Shoppe offers a variety of treats, including ice cream, chocolate, candy, and homemade fudge.
“My favorite thing is definitely our fudge,” Haley Hubbell said. “I’ve never tasted better fudge. My aunt makes it herself.”
Small businesses are the backbone of the Village of Arroyo Grande. Ranging from antique stores to restaurants, the Village has become both a tourist attraction and a popular place for locals. As a family-owned business, Hubbalicous Sweet Shoppe is a colorful addition to Arroyo Grande.
