This holiday season, many enjoyed a long awaited gift: Spotify Wrapped. A kind of holiday in itself. It is a day where people compare, laugh about, and look at the new theme of their Wrapped. The collection of every song, artist, and genre begins on January 1st to October 31st. Then, the Wrapped is revealed late November to early December.
Each new year comes with a new design for the Wrapped. This year’s Wrapped brought something interesting to the amount of statistics shown. The stat is based on the music people listen to and it shows the city that has similar music taste to the person. Some people’s Wrapped gave them none other than San Luis Obispo.
“I actually forgot it was a thing until the day of,” Alex Babshoff (‘24) said. “I knew it was coming but I wasn’t overly excited for it. It was in the back of my mind.”
Even with the abundance of people excited and borderline thrilled for their Spotify Wrapped, there were those that forgot about their own until the day of, traditionally when people start posting about it on their Instagram stories. Reminding those who forgot about it to look at their own and do the same.
“It’s fun comparing your own Spotify Wrapped to your friend’s,” Mason Gomez (‘24) said.
Some people find that their Wrapped isn’t something that they would want other people to see. Having more “controversial” artists on theirs would cause them to not want to share. With that in mind, people sometimes will try to “plan” their next Spotify Wrapped. They do this by listening to completely different genres or artists to not have those artists appear on their next Wrapped.
“The year before I [listened to an artist that is “embarrassing”] and I actively listened to other songs so that wouldn’t happen,” Babshoff said.
Spotify Wrapped isn’t the only way that people can find their Spotify statistics. There are different websites that people can simply google to find out their stats. Websites like Icebergify or StatsforSpotify. December is a kind of “no man’s land” for Spotify tracking for the next Spotify Wrapped. People are still able to check their statistics if they are interested. That also means they can check whenever they desire. This means that it could spoil the fun for the new Wrapped.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
“[Spotify tracking websites] usually don’t tell me my top artists, just my songs of the month or the week,” Leah Bozzano (‘27) said. “So I feel like they don’t spoil it.”
Many people’s Spotify Wrapped turned out to be exactly what they had expected. Knowing their listening habits clued them into what their Wrapped was going to produce. However, some found their Wrapped to be far different from what they expected, making it very confusing for listeners.
“They barely put the music that I listen to,” Sam Palomar (‘27) said. “My number one was a song that I barely listened to. I only listened to it a couple of times and that was it. It didn’t do the other songs that I listen to the most or when I get ready. I was really confused about that.”
No matter what people thought of their Wrapped this year, one thing is for sure: it won’t affect their listening habits. Avid Spotify listeners are going to continue their daily listening the way they have been throughout the year.
