Lucia Mar Unified School District and Arroyo Grande High School have future goals and plans to improve the student and teacher experiences at AGHS.
These include safety, academic excellence, social and emotional goals, and organizational excellence.
“Safety is the number one priority,” Principal Brad Grumbles said.
New safety elements include campus fencing, bathroom vape alarm systems, and the 5-star student program.
“This allows for digital passes and points for students, all aimed at identifying who’s participating and doing what on campus,” Grumbles said.
Academic excellence was the next primary goal mentioned. All students meet or exceed state testing standards in ELA and Math by 11th grade.
Staff hopes to accomplish this by growing and improving our AP program.
To create a solid and balanced advanced placement program for students that will allow them to diversify the courses they want to take and learn about during their high school years.
A new system used by the staff is PLC, or “Professional Learning Communities,”
It will give teachers more time during the week to examine student work closely so they can make the necessary adjustments to meet individual student’s needs.
“This lets us raise the bar,” Grumbles said.
PLC and quality educators align with the goals and standards set by Jennifer Handy, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.
“[My job is to] lead a team that strives to hire the best employees to support making our vision and goals a reality,” Handy said.
A personal goal she has for AGHS is more involvement from local universities.
“I’m hopeful for our local universities to partner with us in a teacher residency program to promote, recruit, and retain quality educators,” Handy said.
AGHS wants to strive for social and wellness goals and better help students with on-site counseling services.
In the future, a specific area can be created where students can have time to themselves during a rough day or to rest.
“We have plans to add a wellness center,” Grumbles said.
If students need that 15-minute break, it can become a place to go and mentally reset.
Organizational excellence for AGHS means that teachers and staff are better at using the online resources given to them.
Since COVID-19, technology implemented in students’ daily learning became ubiquitous.
“Communication happens quickly and frequently,” Grumbles said. “Students have better direct contact. We just have to be better organizationally to manage that.”
A more efficient communication process will save the school valuable time and resources, something Grumbles strives for.
The goals for Arroyo Grande High, continually strive for excellence and a better experience for the students and staff alike and to make Arroyo Grande High the best high school it can be.
