Athlete of the week Scarlett Laurent (‘25) is a year-round runner. Laurent is the girl’s team captain for track and field and cross country. Laurent immediately fell in love with the sport from the moment she learned to run.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of running?
A: How it has pushed me to challenge myself every single day both mentally and physically. It’s pushed me to be the best version of myself and interact with a lot of people. I love the connections that I’ve found through running as well.
Q: What is your greatest challenge with running?
A: Staying motivated is the biggest challenge. It’s hard to get up every day and want to run.
Q: How do you manage sports and academics?
A: It’s just always been a balance for me because I’ve been doing it ever since I was little. I always try to challenge myself so I think it comes naturally if you are invested enough.
Q: What’s your favorite memory when running?
A: The overnight meets that we get to do for cross country and all the fun that comes with that.
Q: What keeps you motivated to keep playing?
A: Running has always been something that I’ve looked forward to and saw as a part of my future so that in itself keeps me motivated.
Q: Have you ever been injured from running?
A: I’ve been pretty lucky with no injuries. I did get plantar fasciitis, [and] it hurt so bad.
Q: Do you hope to keep playing for college in the future or be recruited?
A: Yes, I’m talking to some coaches right now. There’s one school in [Los Angeles] called Pitzer and possibly UCSB.
Q: What’s your greatest victory or key moment when running?
A: I think that’s still to come, but getting the 4×4 school record last year with my team was a good one.
Q: What is your favorite post-game meal or snack?
A: In and out ‘double-double,’ or some kind of burger.
Laurent uplifts the girl’s cross country and track teams through her endless support. She hopes to continue her running career throughout college and is excited to see how far running will get her.
