Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D, is a roleplaying game that most people have heard of, whether they’ve played it or not. Largely due to its appearance in shows like “Stranger Things”, The Conversation claims that “more than 50 million people worldwide are estimated to have played D&D”.
One key reason for this popularity is its accessibility. All you need is some friends, creativity, and a couple of oddly shaped dice.
To play, each person creates a character to roleplay as, whether it be as dramatic as, for example, a grimdark thief who was molded by the streets and seeks to avenge his dead father, or as whimsical as a bagpipe enthusiast who’s just along for the journey and the ale.
One person in the group called the dungeon master, creates a story for your characters to interact with, their abilities and actions dictated by the rolling of dice.
Now the game is even more accessible because a Dungeons and Dragons Club opened up at AGHS.
The D&D Club, which meets Tuesdays at lunch and Thursdays after school in room 607, is a place for long-standing enthusiasts and people who’ve never picked up a dice to gather and play.
“I think D&D is very fun and people can learn a lot of important skills and meet new people that have as interests as them,” president, founder, and Dungeon Master for the club, Maverick Chaney (‘27) said
Chaney, with his many years of experience in the game, enjoys the social and fantastical aspects of playing D&D and wants to create a place where other people with a passion for the game can come together and play.
“My goal is to take every person, new or experienced, and teach them some pointers so that they know how the game works so they can go play,” Chaney said.
Dungeons and Dragons Club provides all the materials necessary to play, and Cheney encourages everyone to attend, whether or not you know how to play.
