On Friday, Feb. 13, AGHS’s improv team hosted one of their many shows. The show, I am the Improv Walrus, was hosted by improv member Penelope Headrick (‘26). The theme of the show was based on The Beatles; a variety of Beatles puns were scattered throughout the show, even in the title.
The show consisted of two teams: the Beatles and the Beetles. Each team took part in a short game based around a word or words that the audience provided. After each team “played” their game, the audience would cheer for whoever they thought deserved points for that round. The games alternated between teams for 10 rounds, with the fifth and 10th being composed of both teams.
Some of the games included categories such as musical guidance counselor talks, rhyming chains, and absurd sports commentary. Many of these games are returning favorites of the teams.

“[Sports commentary] might be my favorite improv game ever,” Headrick said.
The students led most of the show by themselves, while Improv Team Coach Lester Wilson was mostly hands off for the show; he primarily guided the students who had trouble leading an event. With that approach, Wilson watched the team flourish.
“I was very proud of Friday night’s show. The team was connecting to the crowd and the audience was in tune,” Wilson said. “The flow and timing of shows is based so much on how they navigate the games, suggestions, and the improvisers.”
The interactions between the audience and actors help students develop a plethora of skills.
“Improv helps [students] build skills in collaboration, public speaking, critical thinking, and building confidence,” Wilson said.
Most of the games played are well-practiced, familiar fun that the audience is able to interact with and enjoy just as much as the performers.
AGHS’s imorov team’s next show is Feb. 20 at Nipomo High School, hosted by Andrew Orr (‘27) and Dylan Williamson (‘27).
