In the 900s wing at AGHS, one classroom is nestled in the corner with its walls painted to represent the “art wing.” AGHS offers a number of art classes, including, but not limited to, drawing, art history, and both introduction and advanced ceramics courses.
Students can expand their education beyond pencil and paper and achieve a more hands-on learning experience through ceramics. Ceramics classes offer students the opportunity to experiment with their creative sides.
“Whenever we start the classes at the beginning of the year, [Gable and I tell students], ‘You might not have been good at drawing or painting, or you might have felt like you aren’t good at art because of those,’” Ceramics Teacher Julissa Andrade said. “‘But this is a whole new material that you probably have never been exposed to, because it is a more expensive medium art.’”
The second semester of the 2025-2026 school year has students starting on a number of new projects. Both the Introductory (Intro) and Advanced Ceramics classes are taught in one classroom, so projects often overlap. Currently, Intro is working on their realistic food project and Advanced is working on their second free choice project, and teacher nameplates/room numbers.
Introduction to Ceramics projects:
Intro students’ last project was wall pockets and useful objects. Now, the students are focusing on realistic food, targeting realism and proportions in the curriculum.
Advanced Ceramics projects:
Advanced Ceramic students have mostly finished their Garden Gnome project, where they were tasked with creating a gnome with a unique expression. Students are now working on their second free choice assignment, as well as teacher nameplates and room numbers.
