AGHS is adding a new turf area in the 200-300 wing to create more room for students to sit and to make the campus “prettier and more inviting,” according to AGHS’s Lead Custodian Jay Delory. The project, which has been in the works since the start of the ’25-’26 school year, is making advances toward being finished shortly.
The project is being contracted out by the school and will likely be completed the same company that removed the trees and benches previously known to the same section of campus. The layout will be created by LMUSD Employee Jeff Baker.
“We are just trying to add more space that students can actually utilize, rather than just dirt,” Delory said.

Not only will the turf benefit the campus and students, but it will cut maintenance costs and the physical labor of natural grass upkeep. In the past, Custodians would run a hose throughout the campus to supply water to several sprinklers, and then move the sprinklers throughout their Friday-night shift. Eventually, the school stopped doing this, as it was unreasonable for custodians and the costs were too high.
“Then we stopped [watering with the sprinklers], which caused everything to die,” Delory said.
Administrators see this project as part of a bigger plan for campus development, along with the new gymnasium behind the back parking lot.
