AGHS Varsity Football Coach Michael Hartman publicly announced on March 11, 2026, that he will be leaving the program at the end of the ‘25-’26 school year to coach at Santa Ynez High School (SYHS).
Throughout his career at AGHS, Hartman led the varsity football team to three league titles, including two recent league championships in 2023 and 2024.
This year, Hartman served as an assistant coach, and Coach Field was the head coach. When a job opportunity arose at SYHS, it presented Hartman with the opportunity to be a head coach again.
Hartman focused on more than football as a coach.
“It was never about just football; it was about just trying to be a better human. Football is just the arena in which we [AGHS varsity football team] have chosen to do that,” said Hartman.
Hartman used his chance to coach football at AGHS to teach the players how to work through adversity and work hard in anything they do.
Hartman has high hopes for the future of the AGHS football program.
“Coach Field is a dear friend of mine, and he is an Arroyo Grande Alumni; the program really matters to him. I know the program is in good hands and has a bright future.”
In his absence, Hartman wishes the AGHS football program the best of luck and hopes for everyone to find success.
“I appreciate all of the work and the support, and for [AGHS football players and all students] to remember all of the valuable lessons learned, not just from me, but from the football program,” said Hartman.
