The Environmental club, advised by AP environmental science teacher Katie Boos, has been a club on AGHS’s campus for at least 10 years. The club has approximately 14 members who meet every Tuesday in room 707. The club’s goal is to improve the environment, primarily around campus, as well as in the broader community.
Selmah Palomar (‘26) is the club president, and their sibling, Sam Palomar (‘26), is the vice president of sustainability.
Lately, the club has been focusing on campus assistance by adding bins for food waste during break and lunch in the cafeteria. They also assured that all of the classrooms had recycling bins.
In addition to on-campus actions, the club provides support to the Arroyo Grande Turtle Sanctuary. The Turtle Sanctuary is a non-profit organization organized by Jeff Jobs. Jobs rescue exotic animals to raise and take care of them. The Environmental Club is brainstorming ideas to help raise money for the non-profit, and they also plan to host an off-campus seminar to raise awareness for the Turtle Sanctuary.
The club president has been trying to find a way to better help this non-profit organization.
“We are trying to get approved by the student business office to better take action toward helping [the Turtle Sanctuary].”
The club has also changed the packaging in the school cafeteria. Club members worked with the cafeteria staff to accomplish this.
The club gardens after school on Tuesdays around room 207 on the AGHS campus.
In the past, the club has organized beach clean-ups, and they plan to host some in the near future.
The club is always looking for volunteers to help them achieve a better environment on and off campus.
Overall, the Environmental Club is striving for a better environment on and off campus.
